6-WEEK COURSE (2 HRS/WK)

MEETS MONDAYS 6-8PM

APRIL 13 THROUGH MAY 18

This six-week course is designed for teens and adults of all levels who want to explore colorful media and expand their drawing abilities. Working from both direct observation and imagination, students will discover new ways of seeing while expanding skills and creative responses. Throughout the course, students will learn color theory and produce experimental studies alongside vibrant, small-scale finished still life drawings.

FROM PLEIN AIR TO ABSTRACTION

CO-INSTRUCTORS: AMANDA MEARS & SHANNON RAE FINCKE

FOR ADULTS OF ALL LEVELS

4-WEEK COURSE (3 HRS/WK)

MEETS FRIDAYS 10AM-1PM

APRIL 24 THROUGH MAY 15

This four-week course for adults of all levels focuses on painting inspired by the natural environment. The first two classes take place outdoors in Griffith Park’s Fern Dell making observational paintings with pastel and watercolor. The final two classes are held in the studio, concentrating on translating the plein air studies into abstracted acrylic paintings. Students will develop new ways of conceptualizing paintings, strengthen observational skills, and expand visual language. Discussions examining artists use of value, color, and shape to interpret the physical world and express psychological and emotional perspectives complement the classes.

PAPERMAKING: RECYCLED PAPER PULP WORKSHOP

INSTRUCTOR: SOPHIA ALLISON

FOR TEENS & ADULTS OF ALL LEVELS

2-WEEK COURSE (2 HRS/WK)

MEETS SUNDAYS 10AM-12PM

APRIL 12TH AND 19TH

This two-week, hands-on workshop for teens and adults introduces the art of papermaking using simple and accessible tools, materials and techniques. Students will transform everyday recycled materials—such as junk mail, old homework, newspapers, and other scrap paper—into unique paper sheets and sculptural forms. Guided step by step, participants will learn the fundamentals of pulp preparation and creative papermaking methods, and also experiment with embedding seeds from local native plants into paper pulp to make eco-friendly “seed bombs.” Students will leave with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to continue making paper at home.

After a decade of taking classes at Institute for Visual Arts, I can say this has been a journey that has fundamentally shaped my creative practice and visual literacy. Shannon's unique approach of dedicating each academic year of the Core Program to a single thematic exploration allows for greater depth of artistic investigation. Rather than rushing through topics, we're able to develop a deeper understanding of the concepts within the framework. The end of year art show is always magical. It’s amazing to see everyone’s personal take on that year’s theme. Shannon is a gem and I’m looking forward to another year of creating, learning, and sharing with the students in my class! Oh, and of course the IVA session classes and workshops are great quick ways to gain experience in specific mediums and topics!
